Why Summer Music?

Our program fosters a broad community of learners and supports robust high school band programs in the Lamorinda area by offering summer enrichment and support for elementary and middle school instrumental music education. With a staff of professional bay area musicians as teachers, Lamorinda high school band and orchestra students as counselors, and rigorous but fun schedules, students entering grades 4-8 are certain to learn new skills, make new friends, and grow a lasting love of music.

Our Classes

Musical Instruments Jazz Club

World-renown Musicians and Educators

All instrument-specific and band classes, beginning through advanced, are led by incredible bay area musicians and supported by Lamorinda area high school musician- counselors. We boast a 1:20 teacher ratio and 1:10 counselor ratio

General Music

Our students participate in General Music courses, playing music games while learning basic music theory applicable to their age and level of musicianship.

Edwin Cordoba


Band,

Brass

Mr. Cordoba serves as the Director of Instrumental Music at Acalanes High School in Lafayette, CA. He is responsible for teaching the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Pep Band, directing the musical pit orchestra, teaching AP Music Theory and facilitating the chamber music program.


Before coming to Acalanes, Mr. Cordoba taught at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, CA and at Americas High School in El Paso, TX. Throughout his career, Mr. Cordoba's marching, concert and jazz bands have earned consistent high marks at festivals and many of his students have advanced to the TMEA and CBDA All State Bands and Orchestras.


Mr. Cordoba received a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music Education (both with concentrations in instrumental music) from the University of Texas at El Paso, where he was awarded Outstanding Senior in Music Education in 2015. He holds affiliations with CMEA, NAfME, CBDA, CODA and is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.


As an active performer, Mr. Cordoba has performed with the Bluecoats Dum and Bugle Corps, Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, and has had professional trombone appointments with the El Paso Wind Symphony, the Juarez Symphony (Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico) and a salsa group in El Paso named "Sobredosis Del Sabor".


Mr. Cordoba resides in San Francisco, CA with his partner Aaron and their golden doodle, Oliver.

Brittany Shankle is currently the Director of Instrumental and Choral Music at Las Lomas High School and is in her 6th year of teaching. She received a Bachelors of Music in Education San Francisco State University, and a Master of Arts in Teaching online through the University Massachusetts. Brittany has been the Assistant Band Rep for the CMEA Bay Section for the past two years, managing the honor band at the January conference in 2023 and 2024. She received a continuing service award in May of 2023 in recognition of her significant contribution to the students, staff, and community at Las Lomas High School. Brittany also currently plays trombone for the Diablo Symphony Orchestra.

Tana Barnett Scott



Camp Director;

Band, Woodwinds, Percussion


A California Central Valley native, Tana Barnett Scott graduated from the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific with a Bachelor of Music degree in both saxophone performance and music education. After teaching for several years in the Bay Area, Ms. Scott went on to earn a Master of Music Education from Boston University and work in Los Angeles.


Ms. Scott has spent her career growing music programs. At the middle and high school levels, her bands consistently earn Unanimous Superior ratings at CMEA and SCSBOA festivals. Her bands have been featured on the Ellen Show and in Dreamworks films. She has been awarded a California Legislature Certificate of Recognition for creating musicl programs that reflect community culture and values. Tana has served as a festival and competition host for SCSBOA and served on the CMEA Bay Section Board.


Tana has performed with Dave Brubeck, the Brubeck quintet, California Wind Orchestra, Stockton Symphony, LA Winds, SF Wind Symphony, SJ Wind Symphony, Pacific Saxophone Quartet, SF Saxophone Quartet, the Sierra Saxophone Quartet, and pit orchestras around the bay area.


She continues to enjoy limited performances when she is not teaching. When not making music, she loves the outdoors, travel, and burgeoning technology.



Kevin J. Stewart is from the greater metropolitan area of Detroit, and now calls the San Francisco Bay area home. Since graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Woodwind Performance, Kevin has maintained an active performance career, touring throughout North America, Europe, & Asia. Kevin has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, New American Chamber Orchestra, Detroit Civic Symphony, San Francisco Opera and Ballet. As a chamber musician, he has performed with the San Francisco Saxophone Quartet, Nuclear Whales Saxophone Ensemble, Premiere Saxophone Quartet, and the Capitol Quartet. In addition to performing, Kevin is in high demand as a teacher, currently Director of Saxophone Studies at California State University, Stanislaus, and University of California, Davis.

Woodwinds

John Speers was born and raised in Lafayette, where he attended Stanley Middle School and Miramonte High School. He taught elementary school choir and general music for the Lafayette School District from 2016-2022 and currently teaches elementary band and strings for the Orinda Unified School District. He is also the music director for the "Lamorinda Community Band," which consists of a band and orchestra for students and adults of all ages who are looking for an extra ensemble to play with outside of school or work. Additionally, he teaches a full studio of private students at the Lamorinda Music Store in Lafayette. Teaching music is Mr. Speers' true passion in life and he fully values every opportunity to spread his musical passion to the Lamorinda community and beyond.
